As a Salvadoran-American who recently graduated from Indiana University Bloomington with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a minor in Social Science and Medicine, my goal is to build bridges between science and medicine to ensure my community is r ... epresented and considered both in research and practice. This has been a goal since my freshman year of college and beyond. During my undergraduate studies, I independently designed and conducted research projects both domestically and internationally (in Costa Rica), taught a genome engineering course as an undergraduate teaching assistant, became certified as a professional medical interpreter, and interned at a birth center and postpartum house for over two years. At the birth center, I translated healthcare documents into Spanish, organized a fundraiser, and laid the groundwork for a pilot transportation program aimed at reducing barriers related to socioeconomic status, cultural/linguistic differences, and transportation challenges. This project explores racial disparities within Indianapolis’s homeless population, where African American residents are significantly overrepresented despite comprising a smaller portion of the city’s total population. Research highlights systemic r ... acial exclusion from housing as a major contributor, with evictions, loan denials, and discriminatory housing practices disproportionately affecting African American residents. This analysis reveals a persistent racial gap in housing stability using homelessness data adjusted for population size. The findings emphasize the need for systemic change and direct support services to address these inequities. Proposed solutions include expanding access to affordable housing and embedding racial equity criteria into housing policy. Further recommendations include culturally competent case management and targeted financial assistance to improve housing stability for African American residents in Indianapolis. Read more
