The Solutions for Overcoming Life-threatening Actions and Crisis Events for Teens (SOLACE) lab explores adolescent suicide ideation and prevention. One in five students consider suicide, and one in ten attempt it(CDC, 2023). These alarming statistics ... are one of the large driving forces behind the SOLACE lab's focus on refining treatments for at-risk adolescents. We work towards this aim through our Study of Teletherapy Application for Youth (STAY) and the Indiana Confronting Adolescent Risk and Empowering Youth against Suicide (IN CARES) initiatives. The goal of Project STAY is to develop a clinical decision-making tool to aid healthcare providers in assessing when tele-mental services are ideal for adolescents to ensure access to care is maximized, while minimizing risk. The IN CARES program provides suicide prevention services through the Riley Pediatric Clinic, using Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS) therapy. To contribute to these initiatives, I distributed flyers for recruitment, cleaned interviews, conducted literature reviews, created data codebooks, and edited Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) worksheets for adolescents. At my showcase, visitors will learn about the transcription work I completed for the LHSI internship, where I transcribed videos recorded by Stephanie Bartlett, who was asking important questions for research purposes. The videos covered various topi ... cs related to end-of-life medical decisions, and my role was to accurately transcribe the conversations to help ensure that the data could be analyzed for the project. This experience gave me hands-on exposure to the transcription process, as well as insight into the ethical considerations of handling sensitive conversations. Visitors will also hear about how this work contributes to the larger goal of improving healthcare practices and patient care through research. Read more

WISE (Wellbeing Informed Science Evidence) Indiana is a partnership between the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute and the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA) enabling Indiana's academic experts to evaluate and ... e and inform health and well-being practices, programs, and policies. An overarching challenge of this partnership is demonstrating the value and impact of scientific evidence to a variety of stakeholders including state policy and decision-makers. One goal of this internship was to assist in implementation of the Translational Science Benefits Model (TSBM). The TSBM uses 30 elements to highlight the impact on clinical, community, economic, and political factors. Use of the TSBM framework is growing among researchers in clinical and community settings. As the LHSI intern, I conducted a literature search in the Journal of Clinical and Translational Science for studies that used the TSBM and wrote an annotated bibliography. Previous research about the framework contributed to a literature review in a peer-reviewed manuscript in preparation. Additionally, I coded over 15 WISE Indiana reports using TSBM elements as a codebook and analyzed data collected at pre-, post-, and 6-month intervals to articulate the projects' impact. During my internship, I collaborated with scientists and entrepreneurs at IU, exploring life sciences and innovation from “Bench to Bedside.” The internship exposed me to research and medical advancements at Indiana University School of Medicine, whe ... re I had hands-on experiences in various core facilities. I gained insights into high-throughput genomics services in the Medical Genomics facility, including next-generation sequencing, single-cell analytics, and spatial transcriptomics. This exposure enhanced my understanding of the latest techniques in medical genomics and their applications. At the Chemical Genomics Facility, led by Dr. Waffo, I explored the use of RNA phage display technology for biomedical purposes. The lab utilizes the Q-beta (Q?) virus phage platform to map and display functional domains of SARS-COV. This research is important for understanding viral pathogenesis and enhancing diagnostics and therapeutics for infectious diseases. Additionally, my involvement in the Behavioral Phenotyping Core provided exposure to the study of animal behaviors, contributing to a broader understanding of research methodologies. My comprehensive internship at IUSM has broadened my understanding of medicine and innovation, enabling me to contribute to meaningful research. During this internship, research activities focus on Parkinson's disease. Parkinson's disease is a progressive disorder of the central nervous system that affects movement. Additionally, patients with Parkinson's suffer from non-motor symptoms, quest ... symptoms, question their spirituality, lose joy and meaning in life, and burden care partners. One local Parkinson's Clinic surveys patients to assess their unmet non-motor symptoms, struggles with spirituality, and loss of joy and meaning. This showcase highlights patients with Parkinson's disease who grapple with the loss of joy and meaning in their lives. The research aims to determine the demographic and clinical characteristics associated with losing joy and meaning in life. It uses the survey responses, demographics, and clinical characteristics to answer this question. Read more

Brain Safe is a research study approved by IU Health that is focused on providing educational materials about medication safety. Participants will have 3 meetings by phone over the course of the study, an initial Baseline, a ?6 month midterm, and a c ... oncluding? 12 month follow up. Over the course of the study, participants will complete assessments and use a phone app to help track medication?. Through careful tracking, we can help care providers and patients make better decisions about their medication choices?. Participants of this study are able to fully participate in this study from the comfort of their homes via phone app and phone calls. Due to the fact that participants will not be engaging researchers in person, many methods are employed to reach out to participants when a follow up is needed. These include mail, email, and phone calls. First and foremost, it addresses a critical gap in current understanding regarding the comparative effects of different training modalities on muscle fatigue.
